People’s mobility has increased massively in recent years. It has become much easier to look for a job abroad and the legal hurdles for a move have also lessened. Especially the Alpine regions have been hard hit by ‘brain drain’, the migration of talented people. Many gifted managers, scientists and creative minds are spread around the globe and some are very successful. The consequences of the migration of this human capital are substantial, both from a financial and from an immaterial point of view. While the brain drain approach has dominated migration research and public discussion for a long time, we are now seeing an increase in the opinion that the one-sided loss of educational investment and human resources also means a long-term advantage for the country or region of origin: the so-called brain gain. This is exactly the point we want to address. The emotional connection with their home country makes these people into ambassadors for their home country in the whole world. The aim is to latch on to this immaterial resource in order to turn the brain drain into a brain gain.
